You’re known as “a creative.”  Whether you’re a poet, dancer, journalist, actor, singer, novelist, painter, film maker, designer, or screenwriter, your life is exciting but often unpredictable.  With your emotional inner world feeling more real at times than your external reality, it can be hard to navigate the limits imposed by surviving in New York.  Relationships can feel fraught due to the demands on your time and resources.  Frequent travel, erratic scheduling, and roller coaster finances are typical but not conducive to a sense of security.  Often you’re working two jobs while continuing to ply your craft.  Your friends complain either that you’re too obsessed and withdrawn or that you’re depressed and stuck and should consider leaving behind your dream – or both. Family not only is not a source of comfort but also may be the reason you feel compelled to create in the first place.  A traumatic childhood is not uncommon.

Therapy can serve as an anchor, as a sounding board, as a refuge, as a way to work the things out that can’t be squeezed into the bounds of your artistic method.  It can help you “unblock” when creative inhibition is a problem.  Or it can help you organize yourself in time – or space.  It’s a place to laugh and weep – not because you’re performing but because you feel like it.  It’s a place to discover how you really feel – behind your professional façade – or who you really are. Or it can help you figure out how to respond – or not — to colleagues or companions whose needs can be hard to recognize when you’re deep at work.  It’s a place of deep privacy and a place to find the spark that will carry you into your next project – or out of a project that’s become unwieldy.  It’s a place for conversation – and for silence.  It’s yours – and at the same time it’s co-created with me.  It’s a place for letting these contradictions come apart if they need to – or for tolerating them with sadness, humor, and grace.
